About Wisbech Swimming Club

How it all started

Wisbech Swimming Club is one of the oldest swimming clubs in England and was established in the 1890's with members of the club training and holding competitive swimming events in the River Nene!  We believe Wisbech Swimming Club is the 4th oldest swimming club in the UK, with Brighton being the oldest continually running club (1860) and Weymouth (claims of 1825) and Maidstone (1844).

It was started by several young men holding a preliminary meeting on Tuesday evening in August 1865 at the "Old Bell Inn" for the purpose of establishing a swimming club. A president and vice-president were elected; Mr Hinson was appointed secretary and treasurer, and Messrs. Sumfield, Marshall, Heald, Cross and Clark a committee.  Mr Streader, of the Customs, an excellent swimmer, is the swimming master.  The annual subscription was fixed at 5s, exclusive of uniform, which every member of the club will be expected to wear whilst bathing.  There are already 20 members, and the race for captaincy of the club was expected to take place shortly.

Today

Today, you'll be glad to know, we don't swim in the River Nene!  We use the Hudson Leisure Centre operated by Freedom Leisure and use the heated 25m 5 lane pool at the Hudson to train our swimmers as per our swim schedule.

On top of training, we also host internal (Club Championships & Spring Gala) and external competitions (Junior Fenland League).  Our land training for strength and BoxCross Gym.

The facilities at the Hudson allow us to train for diving, using regulation diving blocks, lane ropes and a 25m short course swimming pool.
